MAT 222: Fundamental Concepts of Math 2

CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

Primarily for students in the elementary education and early childhood education programs. Topics include two- and three-dimensional shapes, measurement, dimensional analysis, congruence and similarity, and coordinate and transformational geometry. Special emphasis is given throughout the course to problem solving techniques. Computers and/or calculators are used to solve mathematical problems.

Prerequisite: Achieving an appropriate score on the mathematics part of the ACT or SAT, or completion of MAT 012 with a grade of at least C or scoring at an appropriate level on the Mathematics Placement Test.

Note: Although MAT 221 and MAT 222 can be taken in either order, the department recommends the sequential order.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Solve a variety of problems using Polya's problem solving techniques.
  2. Use a computer to create, manipulate, and measure geometric figures.
  3. Identify and apply measurements for length, area, volume, time and weight.
  4. Prove simple geometry theorems.
  5. Solve geometric problems using coordinate geometry and algebra.
  6. Identify, compare, and transform geometric figures.
  7. Use mathematical symbols and terminology correctly.
