A Redesign for Developmental Mathematics at AACC

The Math FIRS3T redesign program at Anne Arundel Community College is available for all three courses in the developmental math program, MAT-010 Prealgebra, MAT-011 Beginning Algebra, and MAT-012 Intermediate Algebra.

What you can expect as a student in The Math FIRS3T redesign program:

  • TECHNOLOGY is used to enhance instruction, meet individual student needs and establish a positive learning culture in the classroom.

  • CLASS MEETINGS are scheduled in computer classrooms or computer labs with your instructor and classmates.

  • ATTENDANCE is required.

  • NOTE-TAKING Guides aid students in organizational skills and in learning mathematics.

  • RE-TAKES are allowed on all assessments until course learning objectives are mastered.

  • INDIVIDUAL STUDENT-LEARNING needs are met through a flexible pacing schedule that allows for acceleration through the course material.

  • STUDENT SUPPORT outside of class in the Math FIRS3T Labs located on the Arnold campus in Careers 190 and on the Arundel Mills campus in room 311.

TESTIMONIALS

"The primary reason that many students do not succeed in traditional math courses is that they simply do not spend enough time with the material. In our redesign courses, the students log hundreds of hours working on math both during class time and at home. They watch videos and take notes, they complete all of the homework sets, and they must pass every quiz and test using a mastery approach that supports student success. The MyMathLab software supports verbal, visual, and discovery-based learning options and it is available on demand 24/7. The redesign students are learning mathematics because they are doing mathematics. It is an exciting project!"

Professor Robyn Toman, Mathematics Department, Anne Arundel CC

Mrs. Amylee Salamon is an employee now at Anne Arundel Community College who took her first math course, MAT-012 Intermediate Algebra, in the redesign format in 2008. She is now the Evening Math Lab Manager in the Math FIRST Lab in Careers 190 on the Arnold campus.

"Come join us in the Math Firs3t Computer Lab in CRSC 190. Our mission is to help you succeed in your math journey. The lab is a warm and welcoming environment where you can know you are not alone; everyone is here for the same purpose – to reach their goals. This math lab gives you the opportunity to do homework, meet with friends to study, and get answers to your math questions. There is always someone here to assist you with your questions. "

Math Lab Manager, Nikki Longmore and Evening Math Lab Manager, Amylee Raddin
