Orientation Time

The orientation for this course will be Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2016, at 7:00 pm in Room 206 of the Math Building at the Arnold campus.  Please attend the orientation.  The  Orientation Agenda for Calculus 2 will include an introduction to Maple and how to attach Maple to email so that Maple computer assignments can be sent back and forth easily.  Before the orientation, you may want to browse through the Instructor Public Page or the Math 192 Repository of Links Page to get acquainted.

1.  Web Components -

  A.   Canvas - This guided portion of the course is password protected and is accessed through AACC website by clicking the orange myaacc button.   More information follows in parts 2a and 2b below.

   B.   WebAssign - This portion of the course is password protected.  This is where the on-line quizzes will be taken and graded, and the on-line quiz grades posted as you take them.  Once the deadline passes, the grades will appear in WebAssign and canvas. More information about WebAssign follows in part 2a below.

  C.   The Repository of Links Page - This page of links located on a single webpage is where most of the course information can be accessed: the class policies, study guide , assignments (Lessons), Maple worksheets, etc.

2a. Graded components -

This course has five graded components: (1) on-line quizzes, (2) shared exercises, (3) maple assignments (computer assignments),  (4) hour tests, and (5) a final examination.  Each is discussed below.

   (1)  Online Quizzes

We use proprietary software called WebAssign for our on-line quizzes. Follow the textbook link below to see about the cost and access.  To create an account on WebAssign the first time (to take the quizzes), you need five items of information:
   1.  Class key for Math 192 for Spring 2017 is     aacc 2557 4818  .
Class key for Math 201 for Spring 2017 is
aacc 3365 5359  .
   2.  UserName:  (YourName, last name first)

   3.  Institution:   aacc
   4.  Password:  (YourChoice)
   5.  e-mail Address:  (Your e-mail address)
There is a 14 day grace/trial period to register for the use of WebAssign in each semester.

Here are some steps to create an account on WebAssign.
Click WebAssign, click logon, click "I have a class key".
Enter the class key (item 1 above), then enter items 2-4 and then item 5 a little later.

You can take each quiz up to 5 times. However, the last time you take the quiz will be your quiz grade. It is very important that you not take all the quizzes on the last day they are offered. If you wait, you risk running out of time.

Webassign also has access to the Stewart's Calculus eBook. While in WebAssign, in the frame Class Tools (on the left side of the window), click the link, eBook.  The eBook has some built in videos to explain and illustrate some topics. The lessons pages list where those videos are found within the chapters. Go to the page in the eBook, find the camera icon, and click on it to get the video.

The privacy policy for WebAssign is found at  https://webassign.com/corporate/privacy/.

The Dates page discussed below gives the due dates for all assignments including online quizzes.

   (2)  Shared Exercise

To enhance a feeling that you are not alone, you will get to share with other students some of the results of your homework exercises assigned on the Lessons page and found in the textbook.  More information about homework exercises follows in part 2b below  You get to choose an exercise and share it with the rest of the class by posting it in Canvas.  You can either type your solution, using an equation palate for the equations or write the solution on paper and scan it to share the solution.  These shared exercises  will be posted by you, commented on by other students and graded by an instructor.  Further information and instructions are found in Canvas under Discussions. The due dates are found on the dates page.

   (3)  Maple Assignments

Many sections of the text have a Maple computer assignment. If the message for updating the version of maple appears when the worksheet is loading, just click NO. Information on how to associate Maple files can be found on the MapleInfo  page.  The Maple Assignments and Frequently Asked Questions (MapleFAQ)documents  can be found on the  Maple Assignments page.

The due date for a Maple assignment is given in the dates page. In general the due date is the same date as the last date for the hour test for that section. Maple assignments can be handed in late or resubmitted for the next week for a lowered grade. After that, they will not be accepted. For chapter 16 maple, the resubmit date is the Monday after the original due date.

The Maple privacy statement can be found at  http://www.maplesoft.com/privacy/ .

    (4)  Hour Tests

There are five hour tests:
      Chapter 6,
      Chapter 7,
      Chapter 9.4 and 10,
      Chapter 11A   (11.1-11.7),
      Chapter 11B   (11.8-11.11)

The hour tests are taken in the testing center    (Testing Center Hours)   on the Arnold Campus, by default.  Those students wanting to take the tests at another of AACC's testing centers may do so by sending an email to us specifying the particular testing center.

Each hour test is available for a week prior to the due date.  The answers to the hour test will accompany the return of the graded tests.

   (5)  Final Examination

The final examination is required and covers the entire course.  Here are some suggestions for Preparing for the final exam

Due Dates:  The deadlines for the five graded components above are found on the Dates page. There is a column giving the beginning and ending dates for all the graded components. The deadlines for the Webassign quizzes and tests are firm. The Maple exercises and shared exercises may be turned in late for a reduced grade.  The online quizzes, hour tests and final examination must be taken by the due date posted on the Dates page.  Extensions are granted only once and only for the most cogent reasons.

In the quiz column, the dates are the beginning and ending dates for the quizzes in each chapter. Each quiz is live at midnight of the beginning date and will be available until 11:59 PM of the ending date.

In the maple column, the dates are for the last day that the Maple assignments for the chapter can be submitted for full credit. You are encouraged to submit them early. After that deadline, the top grade drops a letter grade for one deadline only. After that the missing worksheet will have a grade of 0..

In the shared exercises column, the first submission date for shared exercises is for one solution and one response. The second submission date is all the rest (at least one more solution and at least one more response). Two solutions and responses are required for each chapter, but extra ones are allowed for extra credit.

In the other column, the orientation date as well as  beginning and ending dates for tests are found.

2b. Non-Graded components -

The course has two non-graded components (1) homework exercises and (2) problem sets.

   (1)  Homework exercises

The Lessons page gives links to study guides for each section of the text,  Calculus-Early Transcendentals, 7th edition, by James Stewart.  In each section of the study guide you will find unit learning objectives,  suggested homework exercises for you to work and some suggestions of the importance of certain topics.  Some of these homework exercises are the ones that will be posted and graded in the Shared Exercises described above.  Answers to odd exercises are found in the back of the text.  Solutions manuals are available for purchase.  We think that regular practice on these homework exercises is very important for your success with the online quizzes and the hour tests.

   (2)  Problem Sets

Problem sets and their solutions, designed for preparation for the hour quizzes, are found in Canvas.

3. Grading Scale -

The tests are designed for the following grading scale:

90 - 100 A             80 - 90 B           70 - 80 C         60 - 70 D          Below 60 F

4. Grading Weights -

There will be a number of hour tests (40% of the grade),  online quizzes (10% of the grade), shared exercises (10% of the grade), computer assignments (20% of the grade) and a final exam (20% of the grade). Hour tests and online quizzes must be taken by the due date.  Maple assignments and shared exercises may be submitted late for a reduced grade. The lowest hour test grade, the lowest shared exercise, the lowest online quiz grade and the lowest computer assignment grade will be dropped.

5. Homework -

The academic regulations in the college catalogue state that a college student is expected to prepare 2 hours outside of class for every hour in class. Look at the Expectation page to see if you have the time for the course. To be successful you must practice until you can't easily make a "misteak".

6. Progress -

It is the student's responsibility to keep up with all assignments and information. Look at the Dates page to be aware of the due dates of the various assignments.  If you run into a problem with staying current,  Contact us .

7. Office hours -

Math offices are located on the Arnold Campus in the Math Building, Room 231. We will be glad to help you by appointment or on a drop-in basis when we are there.   Feel free to contact us also by email or  phone and we'll attempt to respond as soon as possible, but within two business days.  You are expected to be cordial in all communications.

8. Math Labs -

The Math Lab, located in Lib 102 at the Arnold Campus, is available to math students needing assistance with math only.
The Math Computer Lab located in Room 206 of the Mathematics Building at the Arnold campus is open from 9 am to 8 pm Monday through Thursday,  and 9am to 4 pm on Friday when the College is open and classes are in session.
The Math Firs3t Lab located in Room 190 of the Careers Building at the Arnold campus is open from 9 am to 9 pm Monday through Thursday, and 9am to 4 pm on Friday when the College is open and classes are in session.
The lab tutors in the second and third of these labs above are familiar with Maple, WebAssign and calculus if you wish help.

9. Class Participation -

We have scheduled optional class meetings (Help Sessions) on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Math Computer Lab located in Room 206 of the Mathematics Building on the Arnold Campus.  These class meetings serve as problem sessions where we address individually the difficulties that you are having with either the calculus, WebAssign or the Maple.  We encourage you to take advantage of these sessions as your need dictates.

10. Required Materials -

Required materials for the course are the following.

Textbook for Calculus 2  Calculus-Early Transcendentals, 7th edition (2012), by James Stewart , but 4th,5th, and 6th editions are acceptable.  However, you will need a webassign access code for the 7th edition-et.

Access to Maple computer algebra system.  Maple 15 is the current version as of Fall, 2011,  Many earlier versions also work.  We require that you use the Classic Maple (gold icon) for simplicity, as the regular Maple (red icon) is powerful for publishing and has a far greater learning curve.

Access to WebAssign (See  the  Textbook for Calculus 2  link and the Online Quizzes link above for class key information.)

11. Honor -

We urge you to work together and use references on all homework, problem sets and computer assignments. You can have access to your text and notes for the online quizzes.  Hour tests and the final examination are to exhibit what you can do by yourself.  Hour tests and the final exam will be taken in a controlled environment  through our Testing Centers or an equivalent place.
Any calculator in the range of TI-83 through TI-86 will be permitted for use on the hour tests.
One hand written note card (3" by 5") is allowed for each hour test, and a hand written single page (both sides of a letter size paper) reference sheet may be used for the final exam.  You will be given a period of time during which the test can be taken.
If you are a student who has cheated on tests in the past we seriously invite you to take tests honestly here. We have very strong feelings about honor.

12. Drugs and Alcohol -

It is not normal to abuse alcohol or drugs. For information, call the Director of the Substance Abuse Education Program at 410-777-2527.
